The
Other Greeks: The Family Farm and the Agrarian Roots of Western Civilization
The rise of democracy in ancient Greece is certainly one of the watershed events of
Western Civilization. Hanson ties this directly to the rise of the family farm in
Greece, which allowed a new type of citizen to arise... one who owned his own land, was
self-sufficient, and free. He also alludes to the other end of the spectrum... the
loss of the family farm and the resulting loss of democracy. These thoughts
certainly tie in well with Jeffersonian Agrarianism, and are well worth considering today.

Without Dreams: Defending the Agrarian Idea
In this book, Hanson illustrates many of the thoughts developed in The Other Greeks...
by telling of his own experiences on their family farm. In particular, he describes
how they almost lost the farm during the raisin crisis of the 1980s, and how they dealt
with the forces which drove many of their neighbors out of business. While not a
particularly hopeful book, it does a good job describing many of the pressures that
farmers must deal with today. He also defends the idea that agrarianism is central
to the founding principles of America, and its loss will not bode well for the future.
